SASSA Status Check
Check your SRD R370 status, see the day you will be paid, and learn what to do when the portal says Pending or Declined.
Every month, millions of people type in the same two details and hope to see one word: Approved. Sassa status check is the fastest way to find out if your R370 is coming this month, what day it will land, and what to do if the answer is not the one you wanted. This SASSA SRD status check guide covers the whole process for the 2026/27 year. It shows you the official ways to check, the full Payment dates schedule, what each status message means, and the steps to take when your application was declined.
What is a SASSA status check?
A Sassa status check looks up your record in the South African Social Security Agency database. It gives you three things. Your result for this month, the result for every past month you have claimed, and the day your money will be sent once that date is set. What you see is the status of your SRD grant application for that one month, not a final decision for all time.
Here is the part many people get wrong. Approval for the SRD grant is never permanent. Older Persons and Child Support grants stay in place once approved. SRD R370 grant is tested again from scratch every month. Each time, SASSA performs a check of your bank accounts, matches your details with Home Affairs, pulls your income data from SARS, and makes sure you are not getting UIF money, NSFAS funding, or any other South African government support. Pass all of it and the month is approved. Fail one part and only that month is turned down.
This is why your grant status can be approved in June and declined in July, even when nothing has changed for you. It also means one deposit that takes your income over the R628 limit can break the run, even if it was money a family member sent you for an emergency.

What you need to check your status
You only need two things, but both must match your file exactly:
- Your 13 digit South African ID number exactly as it appears on your green book or smart card.
- cellphone number linked to your SRD application. Not your newest number, but the one on record.
The second point causes most failed checks. Your whole SASSA profile is tied to the number you applied with. If you changed your SIM or got a new number, the portal will say “no record found” even though your file is fine. If your mobile number has changed, update the number linked to your application on the portal first, then check again.
How to check your SASSA SRD status – 6 free Methods
All Six options read the same database, so the answer is the same wherever you check your SASSA SRD record. Pick the one that suits your phone and your data. You can check your srd status for free, at any time of day, without going to an office.
Here is how to check your SRD status in four steps.
- Open the official portal or dial the USSD code below.
- Type in your 13-digit south african id number.
- Type in the cellphone number you used when you applied.
- Read your result for each month and your pay date when it shows.
SRD portal
Open srd.sassa.gov.za, type in your ID and your registered phone number, then submit. This is the official SASSA SRD website. It is the only place that shows every month of your history together with the payment method on your file. It is open 24 hours a day, costs nothing except your own data, and lets you check the status of past months too.
srd.sassa.gov.zaUSSD, no data needed
Dial *134*7737# from any phone, even a basic one, and follow the menu. There is also a general code, *120*69277#, that covers all grant types. Neither one needs airtime or an internet connection, so USSD is the safest option when your data has run out.
*134*7737#Use the SASSA WhatsApp line. Save 082 046 8553, send the word Status, then answer the two questions the bot asks. This is handy late at night or over the weekend when the call centre is closed.
082 046 8553Toll free call centre
Call 0800 60 10 11 on weekdays between 08:00 and 16:00 to speak to an agent. Use this when your online result looks wrong, when a payment is late, or when you need a person to look at your file. Have your reference number ready before you call.
0800 60 10 11At a SASSA office
A consultant can open your record on the spot, fix details that do not match, and verify you again with your fingerprints. Bring your original South African ID document. Use this when identity checks keep failing or when you cannot reach the phone on your file. Visit your nearest SASSA office instead of waiting another month.
Find an office on sassa.gov.zaMoya App, free data
Download the Moya App from the Google Play Store on Android. Most South African networks do not charge data for it, so you can open the grant tile and check your status with no airtime at all. There is no iPhone version. Only install it from Google Play, never from a link someone sends you.
Android onlySMS updates
Results and pay day updates are sent to the number on your application, so keep that SIM working. Never reply to an SMS with your ID, PIN or OTP. Those are never asked for by text, and any message that does ask is a scam.
FreeSASSA payment dates 2026/27
Permanent grants are paid over three working days at the start of each month, always in the same order. Older Persons first, Disability second, then children’s and the rest. The SRD works differently. It is last in the queue and goes out in batches in the final week, once the income check for that month is done.
Table below shows the full schedule for this financial year. When a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, payment moves to the next working day.
| MONTH | OLDER PERSONS | DISABILITY | CHILDREN’S & OTHER | SRD R370 WINDOW | August 2026 | Tue 4 Aug | Wed 5 Aug | Thu 6 Aug | 24 to 31 Aug |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September | Wed 2 Sep | Thu 3 Sep | Fri 4 Sep | 24 to 30 Sep |
| October | Fri 2 Oct | Mon 5 Oct | Tue 6 Oct | 26 to 30 Oct |
| November | Tue 3 Nov | Wed 4 Nov | Thu 5 Nov | 24 to 30 Nov |
| December | Wed 2 Dec | Thu 3 Dec | Fri 4 Dec | 23 to 30 Dec |
| January 2027 | Tue 5 Jan | Wed 6 Jan | Thu 7 Jan | 25 to 29 Jan |
| February | Tue 2 Feb | Wed 3 Feb | Thu 4 Feb | 22 to 26 Feb |
| March | Tue 2 Mar | Wed 3 Mar | Thu 4 Mar | 24 to 31 Mar |
Two notes on this month. Heritage Day falls on Thursday, 24 September 2026, which is the very first day of the SRD window. Banks and offices are closed that day, so the first batches will land from Friday 25 September instead. Because the holiday sits inside the payment window, give it one extra working day before you worry. Also remember that R370 batches only start in the last full week. That is why a status page checked in the middle of the month often shows an approved month with no pay date yet.
Your money does not disappear on the day it is sent. It stays in your account until you draw it. Money left uncollected for three months in a row is sent back.
Latest updates
SASSA status results and what they mean
| RESULT | WHAT IT MEANS | WHAT TO DO |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | You passed every check for that month. | Wait for your exact payment date to show. Do not apply again. |
| Pending | SASSA is still checking your details with Home Affairs, SARS and the banks. | Give it 7 to 14 days. This is normal early in the month. |
| Declined | One rule was not met, usually income above R628. | Ask for reconsideration within 30 days. |
| Referred | Your details were flagged as high risk or as a possible duplicate. | Phone the helpline so a person can check it. |
| Bank details pending | You are approved, but no verified account is linked to you. | Add or fix your banking details on the portal. |
| Identity verification failed | Your details do not match Home Affairs, or your number has changed. | Fix it on the portal, or at a SASSA office in person. |
| Application not found | There is no active SRD record for the ID you typed in. | Check your details again, then apply again if you need to. |
| Payment failed or reversed | Money was sent but the bank sent it back. | Speak to your bank, then update the account on your file. |
| Self exclusion response found | An answer on your form said you do not need the grant. | Check your answers and ask for reconsideration if it was a mistake. |
More status messages you may see
The portal also shows messages for each past month, not just the current one. These confuse a lot of first time applicants, so here is what each one means.
Approved but no payment date? Here is why
This is the most common complaint about the grant, and most of the time nothing is wrong. SRD dates are only worked out once the monthly batch closes, and that is usually between the 24th and the 30th. Check before then and the space will be empty or show the word null.
There are three real causes. Your bank account is still being verified, the name on the account does not match your ID, or your phone number does not match and has quietly cut off your updates. Make sure your bank details are in your own name, wait for the release window to finish, and only phone SASSA if there is still no date three working days after it closes.
Common problems and how to fix them
The checks in 2026 are stricter than in earlier years. These are the problems people run into most often, and what actually clears them.
| PROBLEM | WHY IT HAPPENS | HOW TO FIX IT |
|---|---|---|
| Pending for more than 3 weeks | Home Affairs, UIF or credit bureau checks are running slow. | Update your details on the portal to start a fresh check. Still stuck after 4 weeks, call 0800 60 10 11 or go to an office. |
| Declined for income | Deposits of R628 or more were picked up, even money from family. | Ask for reconsideration within 30 days. Attach 3 months of bank statements and explain each big deposit. |
| Bank details rejected | The account is closed, the name does not match your ID, or it belongs to someone else. | Use only a savings or cheque account in your own name and load it again. |
| Identity verification failed | Your name, ID or date of birth does not match Home Affairs records. | Fix it at Home Affairs first, then send it through again. |
| Approved but no money | The batch has not run yet, or your bank is still processing it. | Wait for the 24th to 30th window, then allow 2 to 3 working days. |
| Payment failed or reversed | The money was sent but the bank pushed it back. | Ask your bank why, then load new banking details. Reprocessing takes 7 to 14 working days. |
Why your SRD application was declined
Nearly every rejection comes down to one of these five reasons.
- Other income was found. Deposits adding up to R628 or more in one month, from any source. The system cannot tell a salary apart from a one off gift from family.
- Another benefit on your record. UIF money, NSFAS funding, or any other social grant in your name rules you out of SASSA support. The Child Support Grant is the one exception and does not count against you.
- Details do not match. A changed surname, a spelling mistake, or papers you fixed at Home Affairs that have not gone through yet.
- You live in a state funded home. For example a care home or a correctional centre.
- Age or residence. You must be 18 to 59. South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees and asylum seeker permit holders with valid papers all qualify.
Who qualifies for the SRD R370 grant
The SRD is tested again every month, so passing once does not carry over. If any one point below fails, that month is declined.
- You are a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker or special permit holder with papers on the Home Affairs system.
- You are between 18 and 59 years old at the start of the payment month.
- You are unemployed and not getting any other grant, UIF money, NSFAS funding or a government stipend.
- Your income and bank deposits stay under R628 a month, counting cash in and money sent by family.
- You do not live in a home paid for by the state, such as a state old age home or a correctional centre.
- You have a valid 13-digit ID number that matches Home Affairs records exactly.
- You have a bank account, cash send number or Postbank account in your own name.
- You can be reached on the cellphone number on your SRD file, because OTPs and updates go there.
SRD means test: the R624 income limit
SRD is for people with no other money coming in. The test runs against your real bank records, not what you say on the form. Here is how everyday transactions are treated.
| WHAT GOES INTO YOUR ACCOUNT | RESULT |
|---|---|
| Total deposits under R624 for the month | Pass |
| Total deposits of R624 or more | Declined for that month |
| UIF, NSFAS or another social grant | Declined, you cannot get two benefits |
| eWallet or CashSend received | Counted as income |
| A loan or gift from family | Counted as income, the system cannot tell the difference |
| Child Support Grant only | Pass, the CSG does not rule you out |
How to appeal a declined SRD status
You have a legal right to appeal the SASSA decision. The SRD appeal process has two stages, it is free, you do not need a lawyer, and you get back pay for the months in question if you win.
Reconsideration, within 30 days
Log in to the appeals part of the portal, pick the specific month you are disputing, and explain in simple words why the decision was wrong. Attach three months of bank statements, and if you can, an affidavit from your police station saying you are unemployed. If a large deposit came into your account, say exactly where it came from.
The tribunal, within 90 days
If reconsideration does not work, you can lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development. It is heard by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, a body set up under the Social Assistance Act to look at these cases separately from the office that made the decision. Real people, not software, look at your evidence.
The outcome
You get an SMS with the answer. If you win, you are paid back for every month in dispute. If you lose, you can still qualify again later if your situation changes. There is no further appeal for that month.
You can submit an appeal for one month without touching any other month. If you were declined for any period in the past, each month is treated on its own, so one bad month does not close your SRD file.
How to reapply for the SRD R370 grant
You do not apply every month. An active application is checked again on its own each cycle. A new grant application is only needed when your record lapses, is cancelled, or the portal says “application not found”. It takes about ten minutes.
- Open the official srd.sassa.gov.za portal and choose Apply. Use only that address. Every look alike site is a scam.
- Type in your 13-digit ID and a working cellphone number in your own name. An OTP is sent to it.
- Answer the questions on work, income, other grants and UIF honestly, and agree to the data checks.
- Add a bank account, cash send number or Postbank account in your own name. The name must match your ID exactly.
- Submit and save the reference number on the screen. First results usually show in 7 to 14 days.
How to change your phone number or bank details
Both are done on the same portal, and both need a one time PIN sent to the number already on your file. Choose “Update banking details”, type in the OTP, then follow the secure link you get by SMS.
Use only a savings or cheque account in your own name. The ID on that account must match your SASSA profile exactly. Using a family member’s account is the quickest way to a permanent rejection. Verification takes 7 to 14 working days to show, so change it well before the next payment window opens, not during it.
If you cannot get the OTP because the SIM is gone, the portal cannot help you. You will have to go to an office with your ID book. There is no way around this.
SASSA grant amounts 2026/27
Seven of the eight permanent grants went up by 3.5% from 1 April 2026. The SRD stayed at R370 for a third year in a row.

Where to collect your SRD R370
You do not have to collect on the exact day. SASSA grants stay available once they are sent out. These are the places you can use.
How to check your SRD R370 balance
A status check tells you if the month is approved and when the money is due. It does not tell you if the cash is already in your account. Use one of these to check your balance.
- Postbank or SASSA card at an ATM. Put in your card and choose balance enquiry. Postbank ATMs do not charge for this.
- Your own bank app or USSD. For example *120*3279# on Capitec, *120*321# on FNB, or *130*2626# on Standard Bank.
- At the till. Ask the cashier at Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers or USave to run a balance check before you draw.
- Cash send or eWallet. Dial the balance code your bank sent you by SMS.
Never give your card PIN or an OTP to anyone who offers to check your balance for you. The agency and the banks do not need your PIN to pay you.
SASSA scams and how to stay safe
SASSA will never ask for your card PIN, your OTP, or a payment to release or speed up a grant. Every message promising a “R700 grant” or a rise on your R370 is fake. So is any site that charges a fee to check your status online, because SASSA never charges for a check. Use the official SASSA channels listed above and nothing else. If you suddenly stop getting OTPs, phone the helpline right away. That is the classic sign of someone trying a SIM swap on your file.
SRD grant history: from R350 to R370
The special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant started in May 2020 as a short term R350 payment for adults with no income. SASSA has extended it many times since then, added income testing and bank checks over the period from April 2022, and renamed it when the amount went up to R370.
In the February budget, the Minister of Finance confirmed R36.4 billion to pay for SRD payments up to 31 March 2027. Seven of the eight permanent grants went up on 1 April while the SRD stayed at R370. Government has said the grant will later be rebuilt into a wider livelihoods programme linked to skills and job seeking. More detail is expected at the mid term budget in October.

FAQs
How much is the SRD grant in 2026?
R370 a month. It stayed the same for a third year while the permanent grants went up by 3.5% on 1 April. Treasury set aside R36.4 billion to pay for it up to 31 March 2027.
How often should I check my SRD status?
Once at the start of the month to see if it is approved, then again from the 24th to get your pay date. Checking every day changes nothing, because the SASSA database updates on its own schedule.
Why is my status approved but there is no payment date?
Dates are only worked out once the monthly batch closes, usually between the 24th and the 30th. If that window has passed and the space is still empty, check that your bank account is verified and in your own name.
Do I have to apply again every month?
No. An active application is checked again on its own each month. You only apply again if your record lapses, is cancelled, or the portal says “application not found”.
My status check shows nothing. What is wrong?
Almost always the cellphone number. Your whole file is tied to the number you applied with, so a new SIM shows no record even when your application is fine. Update the number on the portal first.
Can I check someone else’s status for them?
Yes. Many people check their SASSA result for a parent or a partner. You only need their permission, their ID, and their registered number. Nothing else on the file is shown.
My status changed from approved to declined in the same month. Is that a mistake?
Not always. SASSA keeps checking through the month, so a late deposit into your account can change the result after it was first approved. Dispute it if that deposit was not income.
